Separation anxiety
develops in dogs that are often left alone for several hours or days. The
phobia can develop when a dog or puppy misses the company of the other members
of the pack. Dogs that have experienced maltreatment or has been abandoned are
also more prone to developing separation anxiety. The problem is compounded
when the dog lacks physical and mental stimulation, thus they are left with
nothing to keep them busy and occupied. Dogs with separation anxiety are more
prone to developing undesirable behaviors while undergoing severe stress. They
can become destructive, eliminate anywhere in the house, display aggressive
behaviors, or try to find ways to escape. While dogs of any age, sex, or breed
can suffer from separation anxiety, the problem is more common among puppies
and older dogs.
