Guinea pigs are fond of foraging— you may keep treats in haystacks to let them hunt. Make it a habit to hold them for a few minutes. Cavies like to cuddle. If you're not fond of bathing cavies, a couple of brushing sessions each week may help. The messy cavies may push their stuff out of the confinement. Although they aren't recommended for toddlers, cavies may just be the perfect cuddle buddies for school-age kids. It's best to consult the vet if you're compatible with cavies.
A solid-bottomed wire cage (7 to square feet wide) is the ideal habitat. Either aspen, pine, or newspaper may work as bedding but avoid cedar. Their diet primarily consists of hay, veggies, and fruit every week, plus a sufficient amount of water daily. Provide them toys and daily out-of-the-cage exercise in a cavy-proof room. Soiled bedding must be cleaned daily, plus intensive cleaning every week. Cavies may live between 4 to 8 years.
