Protecting Your Horse From Blanket Sores

When the blanket that your horse does not fit right, it might result in blanked sores. Look out for hair loss or sores in several parts of the body. If your horse has a high wither, you can lessen sores by using a blanket with a high neck or wug style. Another option would be to get a blanket with a low V front. Try to use different styles to help you choose which will work best.

A blanket liner is an effective method to separate the body of the horse from the blanket. This liner also reduces friction from the blanket. A good material for the liner would be soft fleece. It is also good to use nylon liners because these lessen friction too.

It is best to use topical treatment when you start to see blanket sores on your pet. You want to control the sores so they don’t become wounds.

Too much moisture under the blanket can also encourage skin irritation. Check if the blanket is heavy because it can cause sweating. Or you can wait until the sweat is dry before blanketing.

It is also good to use a waterproof blanket to keep the horse dry when he has to stay under the rain or snow.

If your horse has blanket sores, it is a good idea to have it checked by your veterinarian Wichita, KS to prevent infection and other problems.
