Caring For An Angry Cat

Cats are small, but they have big personalities. While many are cuddly and lovable, others are rather cantankerous. What do you do if your pet is a bit of a grump?

Rule number one here is very simple: never force attention on your feline pal. She may look super cute, but if she doesn't like being held or petted, she may morph into a furry ball of rage as soon as you touch her. That said, she may be perfectly happy snoozing on the couch beside you, or even just hanging out on the other side of the room.

Playing with your feline pal may also help. This will at least give your cat a way to work off any angst she is feeling! Your kitty may be quite a bit calmer after she's worked off her zoomies!

If your kitty hasn't always been grumpy, you may need to take her to veterinarian Anderson, IN. Sometimes, medical issues can be behind a pet's sour mood. Click here to know more.

How To Introduce Puzzle Feeders To Your Cat

Puzzle feeders are a great way to keep your cat stimulated mentally and physically. Consider this device when you keep your cat indoors most of the time. Your cat needs several activities that can help her exercise her body and mind.

If you have started using a puzzle feeder, continue doing it. Observe if your cat is enjoying the use of such a device. When your feline has shown proficiency in using it with no indications of frustration, anxiety, or stress, try increasing the level of difficulty of the device. How? You may start using puzzle feeders with smaller or fewer holes, with opaque shapes, or with harder manipulation techniques.

Experts recommend trying several types or designs of puzzle feeders so your cat will remain excited and eager to try new strategies. Your cat may also have a preference, so be observant of her behavior. Remember that using this mealtime technique can ensure your cat’s happier and healthier life.

Pet Rabbits Require Preventive Medical Care

Rabbits, like other house pets, require frequent medical treatment. A visit to the veterinarian is necessary soon after you have your new rabbit to confirm that it is healthy. You also need to maintain your rabbit's annual medical check-ups. The veterinarian typically requires a stool exam to determine if there are intestinal parasites.

Female rabbits usually undergo spaying or the removal of the reproductive organs upon reaching six months. Over 50 to 60 percent of female rabbits acquire uterine cancer if not spayed before the age of 3. In the case of male rabbits reaching sexual maturity, they may engage in urine spraying to establish their territory, which could soil your furniture or other pets. As such, male rabbits undergo neutering to address the obnoxious habit.

Finally, rabbits cannot go for several days without eating. Suppose they do not eat for one day. In that case, they can develop gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially fatal condition causing severe dehydration. The food inside the gastrointestinal tract does not move properly, and gas-producing bacteria overtake the normal bacteria, which assist in food digestion. The gas causes discomfort and makes rabbits unwilling to eat, thus resulting in dehydration. Rabbits with gastrointestinal stasis require urgent treatment. Otherwise, they will die.

The Importance of Cleaning Your Pet Rabbit’s Cage

It is essential for your pet's health that you keep its cage clean and sanitary. Because of the animal urine and excrement, the cage's enclosed environment creates an excellent environment for microbial growth. As a result, cage cleaning must go beyond simply removing dirt and waste products. Pet cages need disinfection at least once a week in addition to regular cleaning. Most small pets have a particular odor that some may find offensive, including pet owners unaware of it before taking the small pet home. Neutering can help eliminate some unpleasant slight pet odors. However, you should still clean your pet's cage appropriately, even if your pet already underwent a neutering procedure. The pet's behaviors and the cage's size primarily determine how often you should clean the enclosure. Washing the pet's food and water containers and letting them dry before replacing and removing soiled bedding or changing the litter are some of the things you should be doing every day. Aside from regular cleaning, the enclosure, and the cage furniture need disinfection every week. Before returning the pet to its habitat, make sure the cage and furniture are completely dry.

Always consult your animal hospital Anderson, IN if you have questions about how to meet your pet's requirements.

Tips For Dealing With A Finicky Cat

animal hospital Anderson IN

A fussy cat could generate frustration when trying to manage her because even if you have tried to offer the highest-quality pet food available, your cat would just sniff at the food, perhaps taste a wee little bit, and then turn away. It is moments like this that can increase the risk of your cat becoming undernourished.

Should this behavior last for more than a few days, you have to ensure that your cat is not currently ill by taking her to the veterinarian for a checkup.  If your vet gives your pet a clean bill of health, start to monitor her surroundings more closely.

In a multi-cat home, your fussy eater must be fed separately from the other cats.  There will be times that a cat could be under undue stress if she feels that she needs to compete against other cats in terms of living area and food.

If you have concerns about your pet’s appetite and eating habits, contact your animal hospital Anderson, IN.

Cats Sniffing Cats

You may be familiar with dogs sniffing one another to communicate in some form. However, have you ever seen cats sniffing one another? Turns out they do. There are some cats that will sniff another cat to communicate in some form of greeting of friendliness. Cats don’t sniff quite as quickly as dog though. When cats meet one another they tend to hiss and growl at first and then sniff each other’s faces and necks. This is the way they tell each other “hello.” Cats sniff the neck and cheek area because they tend to produce pheromones that signal friendship to other cats. Cats do not typically sniff the other cat’s rear until after they have spent some time around them and are more comfortable. Like dogs, cats are able to tell a lot about the other cat by sniffing his rear end. Learn more from your veterinarian Anderson IN.

When Is The Best Time To Spay Or Neuter Rabbits?

Experts recommend spaying (females) or neutering (males) rabbits shortly after they become sexually mature. Depending on the rabbit’s breed, sexual maturity can occur between 4-6 months of age. Giant rabbit breeds, however, could possibly undergo sexual maturity when they’re about 9 months of age.

Fixing rabbits that are younger than 4 months old is not recommended because their reproductive organs are still underdeveloped which can make surgery more difficult. The male’s testicles might not have descended yet into the scrotal sac.

How is sexual maturity in rabbits determined? In males, the testicles should already be present in the scrotal sac. In females, a swollen vulva may be noticed. Sexually mature rabbits also display changes in behavior such as urine spraying and increased displays of aggressive behavior.

If you have questions and/or concerns about spaying and neutering of rabbits, consult your vets Anderson IN.

Cats and Constipation

Constipation can happen on occasion in people and in animals including cats. Signs that your cat may be constipated include your cat straining to poop, leaving small or hard clips of poop in the litter box, or even just living small liquid pieces in the litter box. This could be a clue that your cat has something going on. You should call your vet and schedule an exam. Cats should have one bowel movement a day. If your cat doesn’t have a bowel movement one day then wait to make sure the cat has one the next day. If not then call the vet. Other signs of constipation may include mucous or blood covered stools, loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, abdominal discomfort and even lack of self grooming. Low fiber diets, dehydration, excessive grooming and numerous hairballs can all be causes for constipation. Learn more here or call your vet Anderson, IN.

Abscess In Snakes

An abscess is a lump in the skin that can occur in various sizes. The lump contains pus that is firm, unlike most abscesses in which the pus is runny and can easily be removed. In snakes, an abscess needs to be removed surgically, especially the larger ones because aspiration or draining of the pus is not possible. If you find a lump on your pet snake’s body, you should have it checked by  a veterinarian. You should never remove an abscess by yourself. Some abscesses contain foul-smelling pus when opened, and an open abscess can pave the way for more serious infections. Most abscesses are caused by a bite or injury, however, there are types of abscesses that develop as a result of an internal issue, and this type can be more serious. Because of the possibility of septicemia or blood poisoning, you should take your pet to the vet clinic Anderson, IN ASAP.
