Anal Gland Cleaning for Dogs Like the Bichon

vet Spring Hill TN

Have you noticed that your Bichon is a little smelly near its backend? It may smell like he’s passing gas with a fishy odor to it. If so, the smell may not be from your pup’s poo as you would think. The smell could be coming from the dog’s anal glands. Anal glands are meant to provide a strong and potent scent for marking territory. They also help eliminate toxins and other substances that aren’t needed. Small dogs like the Bichon Frise is prone to suffer from anal gland inflammation, anal gland dysfunction, and even abscesses and tumors of the anal gland. Things that can cause these illnesses include the dog’s diet, general body toxins, obesity due to carb-based diets, liver imbalance, or even spine or muscle energy. Call your vet to set up a routine exam. In most cases, cleaning and empty the anal glands will solve the problem. Learn more from your vet Spring Hill, TN.

Kennel Cough In Dogs

vet Spring Hill TN

Dogs with kennel cough emit a sound like that of a honking goose. The honking sound can be accompanied by foamy discharges, choking, or gagging. You will also find your dog lacking the energy he used to have and he may develop a fever. However, aside from these symptoms, affected dogs appear to be active and healthy.

Kennel cough is highly transmissible from one dog to another. The affected dogs spray loads of the virus into the air when they sneeze or cough. Close interaction could also lead to the virus being transmitted. A dog may also acquire the problem through contact with contaminated objects. Spending time with other dogs in daycare or at a dog park can also increase the risk of acquiring kennel cough.

Learn more about what preventative measures can be done to protect your dog from kennel cough by asking your vet Spring Hill, TN.

Keeping Your Pet Warm in the Winter

vet Spring Hill, TN

Your pet might be wearing a permanent coat of fur, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get cold. In fact, pets can easily get cold in the winter, and can even experience frostbite and hypothermia if exposed to the elements for too long! Here’s how to keep your pet warm this winter:

● Keep outdoor time short. When your pet goes outside to play or use the bathroom, make sure they’re not left out for too long. Unless you have a pet like a Husky who is well-acclimated to the winter weather, your pet will be most comfortable indoors.

● Dress your pet up. Try jackets, parkas, or a sweater for those chilly wintertime walks.

● Check the bed. Make sure your pet isn’t going to sleep at night near a drafty window or door.

How to Apply Flea and Tick Ointment to Your Dog

If you aren’t accustomed to using flea and tick ointment on your dog then you may want to read on for a few tips. Your vet can also give you a few tips. Applying a spot on flea and tick treatment can be difficult. In general, you should open the little tube of solution and then place the tip of the applicator underneath your Shepherd’s fur on his back right between his shoulders. Gently squeeze the tube and apply it down your dog’s back as he cannot reach his back to lick it. Do not rub the solution in; instead, allow it to soak in. Make sure you squeeze all the contents from the tube. Once finished, praise your dog and let him know how well he listened and obeyed. It is recommended to apply flea and tick topical treatments every month. Call your vet Spring Hill TN if your dog has a reaction.
