Proper Time to Switch Your Pet’s Food

When it comes to switching your pet's kitten or puppy food to that of adult pet food, the general advice is to make the switch when your pet has reached 9 months up to 1 year of age. But you must note that this general advice is not always applicable.

For instance, a pup of a large dog breed must keep using the growth formula for a much longer time than many dog breeds. Meanwhile, the switch to special adult pet food from adult pet formula is generally recommended to be done once your cat or dog has reached about 7 years of age. It's very important for you to know the right time to switch these foods so you can maintain your pet's health. You could increase the chance of your pet becoming overweight if you fail to switch to adult pet food from the growth formula. Don't forget to purchase pet food that is high quality and appropriate to your pet's life stage.

Do consult your vet clinic McHenry IL before making any changes to your pet’s diet.

How To Give Medications To Your Pet Dog

It’s common for pet owners to rush to the nearest vet clinic for their pets’ ailments. Though this is a good practice, it wouldn’t hurt to learn some basics. One of the few things that pet owners should know about is how to administer medicine to their pets. Handling your dog’s mouth should start at an early age so that they can get used to the sensation. Start by placing the pup on your lap, this way he’s easier to control. Then, gently hold his muzzle and lower jaw with each hand and gently pry open the pup’s mouth. While open, a small treat can be placed at the tip of his tongue to avoid accidentally choking him before releasing your hold on his mouth. The treat is for positive reinforcement of desired behavior. You can also ask your pet clinic McHenry IL to show you how it’s done.

Can a Guinea Pig be Leash Trained?

Absolutely! A guinea pig or cavy as they are sometimes referred to can definitely be trained to walk on a leash. Of course it all depends on whether or not your guinea pig wants to learn. Some cavies can be quite opinionated and refuse to learn while others may be eager to please. Start with picking out a harness for your guinea pig. Make sure it’s the right fit. Not too big that he’ll come out of it, but not so small that it hurts or leaves marks in the fur. Allow your cavy to walk around in his harness for a time or even a day or two before trying the leash. Reward your cavy every step of the way with a treat. When you’re ready for the leash, attach it to your guinea pig and gently nudge him to walk. This may take several attempts. If you need assistance, consult with your McHenry, IL vet clinic.
