Creating an enclosure for a pocket pet

You have a pocket pet coming into your home soon and it’s important to you that her enclosure is a comfortable place for her to spend some time. How can you make this a place she can thrive in?

Your pet needs you to take the time to think about her needs as this will help you figure out what you should put in her enclosure. This will, in turn, help you figure out what size she needs and how much space will be available to her in different options. You will then need to consider her preferences as well as what she will do for fun in this area. Be sure to make it easy for her to navigate and to leave room for improvements in case changes need to be made down the road. Secondhand Smoke and Your Cat

vet Portage, MI

The dangers of secondhand smoke are well known. It is equally dangerous to your cat so if she is in a smoky home she is at an increased risk of respiratory issues and even some cancers. If she is an indoor cat, she is exposed to tobacco toxins at all times. She will also absorb toxins through her feet and body from any surfaces where smoke has settled. And your cat will ingest toxins while grooming herself or companion cats. Thus, the safest thing for your cat is to keep your home free of smoke. If this is impossible, air out your home frequently. Thoroughly wash all surfaces your cat frequents especially fabrics such as the carpeting, your bedding or your cat’s bed. Empty ashtrays promptly so your cat doesn’t use the butts as toys to bat around or eat them. Contact your vet Portage, MI to learn more.

How Often Should I Feed my Guinea Pig?

How often you feed your guinea pig will depend a lot on your guinea pig’s disposition, how much hay he eats during the day, and how many treats or snacks he has. In general, guinea pig’s should be fed a pellet food one to two times a day. You can fill your guinea pig’s food bowl half way in the morning and half way at night if you want to spread out the feedings. Or, you can fill the bowl every morning so that you feed just once a day. In addition to pellet food, you should give your guinea pig timothy hay throughout the day. As long as he’s eating the hay there’s no set number of times he should receive it. It’s good to keep a fresh pile in front of him continuously. Water should be refreshed daily. It should be checked multiple times a day. For more instructions and tips, call your vet Portage, MI.

Tips to Prevent Your Dog From Biting Someone

While there is no guarantee that your pooch will never bite someone, you can take steps to reduce the risk significantly. Here are some ways you can undertake toward dog-bite prevention:

l  Have your dog spayed or neutered because dogs that undergo any of these procedures have been observed to be much less likely to bite. The procedure removes a dog’s reproductive organs which are responsible for the production of sex hormones that can fuel dominance, desire to roam or fight with other dogs.
l  Socialization is an important factor that should never be taken for granted by responsible pet owners. Dogs should receive adequate socialization while still very young. Being exposed to different types of people and situations will help a dog adjust easily to various circumstances as he grows into adulthood.
l  Obedience training will help teach your pooch good manners and discipline.
