Can Cats Swim?

A cat’s ability to swim might not necessarily be so. While there are some breeds such as Bengal cats that have swimming skills, this does not particularly make your pet cat an expert swimmer if she initially encounters water.

There are cat bodies and hair coats that are not meant for swimming. Some cats seem to be natural swimmers, while there are also cats that will find swimming to be a challenge. Then there is that panic aspect, that is, if your pet cat has not been in a body of water before, she might flow around in panic as opposed to swimming for safety.

And so, it is not always safe or wise to think that your pet cat has the ability to swim. Before you leave your pool cover off, try teaching your cat to swim or if she does fall into the pool on accident, pause for a moment before you rescue her and observe if your pet can right herself and swim to safety.

Caring For Your Baby Snapping Turtle

Caring for your baby snapping turtle can be complex.  The conditions for their upkeep can be quite onerous for some: a variety of places where it may climb and hide, clean water where it may swim, controlled temperature (75 to 78 degrees in Fahrenheit for the water, while 80 to 86 degrees in Fahrenheit for the air) and lighting for optimal living conditions, and a place where it may bask under the sun which should be roughly at 90 degrees in Fahrenheit.

The lighting should be on a 12-hour cycle of light and dark, with ultraviolet light so they can take in enough Vitamin D apart from processing calcium.

 Feeding

Your baby snapping turtles need to be fed once daily only after they turn six months. Prior to six months, you need to diligently feed them twice daily.  Your turtles are considered omnivores and can eat anything from insects, fish, worms, to turtle pellets and aquatic plants. Just be careful since some aquatic plants are toxic also.  Don’t forget to give them their calcium supplements daily and multivitamin supplements weekly.

A sudden change in your pet's diet  and/or eating habits should prompt a visit to your animal hospital Crown Point, IN.

Tips for Managing Aggression In Cats

Aggressive displays in cats are never welcomed by pet owners. This is one of the reasons why cats are abandoned or surrendered to the shelter by their owners. Here are some tips for managing cat aggression:

• Don’t let the felines straighten out their mess with fighting.  It will not resolve anything. Fighting will not do anything well but instead will be a catalyst to further fights.  To stop a catfight, splash them with water, or try making a loud noise that will stupefy them.

• Spaying your cats is the best way to remove their urge to fight.

• Don’t let them share resources. Give each cat her litter box, toys, etc. in different spots in your home.

• Never try to pacify your feline. Give her some space and alone time to simmer down those emotions.  That aggression might be directed towards you if you try to come near her.

• Reinforce friendly behavior by giving treats.

• Try using pheromones.  This product copies a natural feline odor which reduces feline aggression.  You can use a diffuser to launch this. By the way, humans can’t smell this and be affected by it.

Cat Care Hygiene Tips

Regarding cat hygiene, there are cat owners who think that it is not something to worry much about. After all, they think, cats do groom themselves, biting and licking their own fur. Yes, you can see this in your pet cat as she spends time managing her hair coat, getting rid of any debris and dirt, something your pet can be proud of. But even if cats require less frequent home bathing and grooming than dogs, your pet cat will still benefit from being groomed every now and then to aid them with their overall hygiene. Cat grooming is less of a chore when compared to dog maintenance, but it does not mean you should neglect to groom your cat ever.

Should you or another family member have any allergies to pets, then giving your cat a bath can significantly help. Washing your pet cat reduces the cat dander that triggers allergies. A bath given once a week or every other week should be sufficient. While this may not remove 100% of the allergen, it should reduce it enough so that any person in your family who is allergic can still benefit from it and enjoy your cat’s affections more.

Any sign of illness exhibited by your pet should require a visit to your animal hospital Webster, NY for proper medical attention.

How To Manage Cat Aggression

What do you do when your pet cat is acting aggressively towards others? Your first step would be to stop them from fighting since they will never resolve their issue. To stop them from fighting, you can spray them with water or clap your hands loudly.

It is also advisable to have the cat neutered or spayed to keep from becoming aggressive.

You can put each cat’s accessories away from one another. Their food and water bowl, as well as bed and litter box, should be spread far apart. It is good to create more perches or hiding spots for your cat. They can go to this quiet space when they want to be alone.

Do not come close to an aggressive cat. Just leave her alone until she calms down, or else she might hurt you. Why not try to get pheromones to help the cat become calmer? Use a diffuser to spread the pheromone when the cats are acting aggressively. Finally, you can reward your cat’s positive behavior. Give her a treat when she is friendly.

How to Achieve Good Water Quality For Pet Turtles

The essential factors in achieving the ideal water quality for your pet turtle are changing the water often, as well as the use and maintenance of a high-quality filter for turtle tanks.  It is that simple.

The fact is, aquatic turtles are quite messy and will perform all their needed business while in water.  Since it lives in water, it will eat while in water and will do its bathroom necessities while in water too.  So, your pet’s health is highly dependent on how you maintain quality water in its tank.  You can achieve this by scheduling regular changes of the water along with a water filter of high quality so that the water is kept clean between changes.

Feeding your pet turtle properly is also essential in keeping the water quality in ideal parameters.  Ensure that your pet gets to eat everything placed inside his tank.  Any uneaten turtle food must be removed so that ammonia does not accumulate in the water.  You can use the strips that aquarium fishkeepers use to test ammonia levels in the water.  Just wet them inside the take for a reading.

Problems That Might Affect Your Dog’s Paws

If your pet licks his paws too much, it might cause an infection, perhaps a yeast or a bacterial infection.  This is because of all that additional moisture that gets added to his pause from all that licking.

Then other possible infections could happen because of environmental aspects, like something your pet might have stepped on outdoors.  Should you see any indications of infection on your pet’s paws like discomfort, redness, and swelling among others, you have to take him to the veterinary clinic immediately for a checkup and treatment.

Trimming your pet’s nails is also essential to paw care.  Should you let your dog’s nails grow too long, they might get in the way of how he walks, possibly injuring his paw pads.  Your pet’s nails must not make contact with the ground if your pet is on flat surfaces and standing upright.  This is one method of checking if your dog needs his nails trimmed.

If you have any concerns about your pet’s paws, have your pet checked by your animal hospital Gresham OR.
