Guinea pigs are cute little pocket pets. They don’t require a lot of
care except for cage cleaning and regularly feeding and a little
grooming. One thing they require that you may not know about is the
degreasing of the back end. Generally, guinea pigs have glands that are
just about where a tail would be on the rear end. The dime sized gland
secretes a grease like substance so that the guinea pig can leave his
scent or mark areas as his own. Male guinea pigs will leave the scent
quite a bit if it’s mating season or he has his eyes on a particular
partner. They may also leave a scent in the process of fighting another
male for the female. Ask your vet to check the gland routinely to avoid a
residue build up. You can clean the gland on your own with cotton ball
and eucalyptus oil, coconut oil, or even Dawn dish washing liquid. Ask your veterinarian Ellicott City, MD for assistance.
