Acid reflux
occurs when acid and other fluids from the stomach are able to reach the
esophagus by passing through the sphincter in the upper part of the stomach.
The condition is also called gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). While
there is no outright cure for the problem there are various solutions and
preventive measures that can be observed to prevent flare-ups. To adjust the
dog’s pH level of the stomach, your veterinarian Forest Hill,
MD may prescribe an antacid and/or a change in diet to ensure a
long-term benefit on your pet’s health and well-being. There are also human
foods that can help prevent acid reflux in dogs, such as a meal of blanched
vegetables and chicken or sweet potatoes, and rice. This should be given in
lieu of pet food. Divide your pet’s daily ration into smaller meals and given
at regular intervals throughout the day. Smaller portion sizes and an increase
in meal frequency help prevent stomach distress.
