Why does your cat purr?

Your cat is a part of your family and you want to make sure you are able to understand her to the best of your ability. This makes you wonder about the motivation behind certain behaviors. Why does she tend to purr from time to time?

Your cat tends to purr when she is feeling relaxed and content. This was originally meant to let her mother know how she is doing when she was a young kitten. She may be using this to let you know that she is happily resting in your care and that she is enjoying your company. She may do this out of habit if she is used to soothing herself with purring as well. This can help her to get into a relaxing state of mind if she is having trouble calming herself.
