Will Your Pet Bearded Dragon Require A Bath?

The only appropriate answer to that question is “maybe.”

Bathing a pet bearded dragon will offer the animal a chance to drink the bathwater. Bath benefits to your pet bearded dragon is similar, but the delivery method, through the mouth instead of the anus, is different.

Considering the concept of drinking through the cloaca, the bearded dragons’ origins become important. These reptiles hail from central Australia, which is about as dry and parched as an area could get. Bearded dragons spend much of their time on a rock, basking. They can also burrow under the sand in order to escape the heat.

So, in the wild, bearded dragons do not bathe. Their natural environments do not have rivers and pools that will let a reptile soak in water.

One other argument against drinking through the cloaca is that the environment is hot. Having a mucous membrane that can absorb water can also lose water, therefore, taking in water through the cloaca becomes a disadvantage as opposed to an advantage.
