Does Your Cat Require Carbohydrates ?

Because cats are obligate carnivores, their ability to consume, digest and make use of carbohydrates is reduced.  This is because a carnivorous animal’s diet has relatively low carbohydrate content by nature.  Comparing this to various other animals, a cat will get most of her blood sugar (consequently, her energy) from breaking down the protein found in her diet instead of carbohydrates.  But this is not to say that you should exclude carbohydrates in your cat’s diet or that cats cannot utilize carbohydrates, rather, cats do not have robust carbohydrate digestion and utilization capacity so their diets have to be carefully formulated.

Aside from when they were kittens, a lot of cats’ lactase enzyme levels in their gut are quite low.  Lactase is responsible for digesting the main carbohydrate (lactose) found in milk.  Because of this, offering your pet cat ordinary mild in significant amounts could likely make your pet have diarrhea.
