What Are the Signs of High Blood Sugar in a Cat?

Cats don't normally eat cookies, cakes, or candy, so watching out for high blood sugar may not be something a cat owner would think to do. But high blood sugar can develop in cats and knowing what signs to look for can help you get Fluffy the treatment she needs.

High blood sugar affects cats in many of the same ways it affects humans. When left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems and life-threatening complications, including diabetes, dehydration, severe depression, problems with motor function, coma, and even death.

Cats with high blood sugar often appear lethargic and experience appetite changes including increased hunger or decreased appetite. They may also experience weight loss despite eating more than usual. Some may experience vomiting or diarrhea as well.

Other signs to watch for include:

       Excessive thirst and urination

Weakness or little to no energy

       Dark-colored urine

       Confusion or disorientation

       Seizures

If your cat is experiencing any of these symptoms, take her to a veterinarian immediately for testing and treatment options.

And if you have more questions or wish to schedule Fluffy for a checkup, please don't hesitate to call us, your local vet Cypress, TX anytime!
