Ear Mites in Dogs

Did you know that dogs can get ear mites? If you see your dog scratching at his head or ears or even shaking his head back and forth a lot then you should call your vet. Your dog may have anything from an ear ache or ear infection to ear mites. Your vet can take a look in your dog’s ear to determine what’s going on. Common mites found in dogs include the Otodectes cynotis or ear mites. Signs of ear mites includes excessive scratching and shaking of the head. A dog may shake his head so hard or so much that a hematoma of the ear or broken blood vessel may occur. Still other dogs may scratch their ears so hard that they pull the hair out of their ears. Mites can be very irritating and cause your dog to become agitated and possibly aggressive due to the pain. Treatment often includes antibiotics and ear drops.
