Common Causes Of Cough In Dogs

Coughing in dogs is not a disease in itself, rather it’s usually a symptom of an underlying health issue that is affecting the animal’s respiratory system. There is a long list of issues in which coughing is a common symptom. These causes are divided into 4 categories :

  • Infection - can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites. Coughing can be a red flag of canine distemper, heartworm disease, or kennel cough.
  • Auto-immune disease and inflammatory problems - Allergies are important causes of coughing. Dogs can exhibit allergic reactions to a number of allergens such as food, pollen, second-hand smoke, fleas, etc.
  • Degenerative and geriatric issues - common causes of coughing in this category include congestive heart failure, paralysis of the larynx, or certain forms of cancer.
  • Congenital problems - Some canine breeds are genetically predisposed to developing a tracheal collapse. This is a common issue affecting brachycephalic dogs, such as pugs, boxers, Boston terriers, French bulldogs, and Japanese chin among others.

Any sign of coughing or other respiratory symptoms should require a visit to your animal hospital Anderson, IN immediately.
