Why Cats Knead Blankets?

One possible reason a cat will knead is thought to be reminiscent of her kitten days. If you have seen a kitten nurse, you may have also seen the same behavior in an adult cat. The kitten would latch onto the mother cat and then use both paws to knead while nursing. This action seems to aid the mother cat in milk production. Therefore, it is possible that your cat is just kneading instinctively.

The milk will contain hormones as well as growth factors which also have small levels of oxytocin. However, research has found out that the amounts rapidly decrease immediately after those first couple of days of nursing. And so the science seems to suggest that the newborns’ sucking action releases oxytocin.

But should you notice your pet cat kneading you, soft surfaces, blankets, or perhaps stuffed animals and maybe even other household pets, this could be because of the once familiar motions of nursing and kneading activating the pleasure areas of her nervous system. Also, if your pet is purring as she does this, it could indicate even more feelings of contentment.

A sudden change in your pet’s behavior should warrant a call to your animal hospital Aurora, CO. Click here to set an appointment.
