Is It Necessary to Vaccinate Indoor Dogs?

You’re probably wondering, “Why should I vaccinate my indoor dog? Isn’t that a waste of money? They don’t go outside!”

Well, you may be surprised to hear that it's important to vaccinate your indoor dog for a number of reasons:

  • First of all, many dogs are not truly indoor dogs—they sneak out through doors and windows.

  • Second, even if your dog does not go outside much, she still may interact with other animals that might carry illnesses.

  • Third, your indoor dog can be exposed to illness from other home pets.

  • Fourth, vaccinations protect against diseases like rabies and distemper.

So how do you know if your dog needs vaccinations? Most veterinarians recommend that puppies receive their first shots between six and eight weeks old and then again between twelve and fourteen weeks old. After that point, they need boosters every three years until they reach adulthood (usually around two years old).
