Newborn Kitten Care

Kittens that are newly born should be kept warm and safe all the time. They are born blind and only open their eyes from 7 to 14 days after birth. They’ll curl up with their mom (if she’s around) or curl around each other. Place a soft bed made of layered materials like blankets made of fleece, or consider making a do-it-yourself bed to fit the entire litter and the mother cat. Place the bed in a draft-free and cozy corner where newborn ones will not be disturbed by children or other pets.

Newborns should be bottle-fed with milk made of special formula if the mother cat is not around to nurse them. Consult with your veterinarian in choosing the right milk formula. Your kitten might choke when fed on her back. Hold your kitten upright or lay him on his side, similar to the position that kittens would be in when nursing from their mother.
