Flystrike in guinea pigs is a potentially serious issue. It is
characterized by maggots eating away the flesh of guinea pigs. These
maggots come from eggs that have been laid by flies on the skin and hair
coat of cavies. The problem is very rampant during summer when there
are lots of flies around and the heat causes eggs to hatch into maggots.
This is very important to check your pet for any signs of maggot
infestation at least twice a day. Eggs and maggots are usually round
around the cavy’s anus. There may also be wounds and loss of skin tissues. Flies associated with flystrikes are
attracted to cavies with dirty or wet hair coats. Dirty hutches are also
