Introducing A Resident Cat To A New Dog And Vice Versa

If you have a pet cat and are planning to adopt a new dog, do not bring your pet kitty to meet the dog at a shelter or other animal facility that keeps many other pets for safety and health reasons. The introduction should instead happen at home.

Do not bring your dog into the shelter if you get a cat since this causes stress or trauma for all cats. It is also not always a reliable sign of your dog's reaction to the house. Instead, you may ask the adoption experts at the shelter if they have confident cats that could meet your dog under controlled settings. If this is not possible, another option is to introduce your dog to a dog-savvy cat owned by a friend or family. You can bring the new kitten home and present it to your family as a last recourse.

If you have concerns about your pet's health and/or behavior, make an appointment with your veterinary clinic Portland, OR.
