Is Your Dog Feeling The Heat?

Your pet dog cannot hold a fan and cool himself using his paws, but he will have other means of letting you know that he is probably overheating.

One obvious indicator that your dog might be overheating is if his tongue hangs low and you see him panting way too much.  Dogs do not sweat to cool themselves as humans do.  They pant instead.  Ben the moisture that is in your pet’s tongue and mouth evaporates, it helps in regulating his body temperature.

Too much panting is an indicator that your pet is experiencing heat exhaustion.  Other signs include a rise in body temperature, unwillingness to walk or move, and low energy levels.  So watch out, because heat exhaustion that goes unchecked can lead to heatstroke in your pet.

Always remember your dog’s body temperature is a bit higher than that of a human’s.  It is about 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes reaching up to 103 F, and still normal.  Because of this, ambient temperature can feel hotter to your dog than it would to you.

If your pet is showing signs of hyperthermia, contact your pet clinic Middletown, DE immediately.
