Your Cat's Ability to Land on Her Feet

Your cat’s righting reflex allows her to quickly turn around in midair during a fall so that she can land on her feet. She can perform this maneuver fast due to her flexible spine as fluid in her inner ears helps her to keep track of which way is up. However, just because your cat can right herself doesn’t mean she won’t be hurt in a fall. Low falls don’t give her enough time to right herself so your cat could crash to the ground. And high falls can be treacherous. Your cat can suffer from internal injuries if her belly bounces on the ground when she lands. Her feet and legs act as shock absorbers so a fall could cause orthopedic injuries. And your cat could die if she bangs her head on the ground. Thus it is important to avoid falls.
