Fighting Back On The Plaque Attack

You may have heard a lot about cavities and tooth decay over the years. But have you ever wondered just how these processes work?

It's actually a quite complex chemical reaction. As you may know, plaque forms on your teeth when you eat. Most people think of plaque as simple food debris, but there’s a bit more to it than that. Sugars and starches that aren't removed from your teeth become a buffet for bacteria. The bacteria ‘eat’ these substances and turn them into plaque.

The acids in that plaque will soon begin to eat away at your enamel, which is the hard outer layer of your teeth. Eventually, it reaches the layer beneath the enamel, which is made of a yellowish substance called dentin. Dentin’s composition includes a lot of small fissures or tubes, which lead to the inner tooth. As that erosion progresses, those tiny cracks and crevasses allow the bacteria to move further and further into your teeth. When that bacteria reaches the inner layer, it really starts wreaking havoc and causing swelling, pain, infection, and other issues.
